Good to know

Is this real encryption, or just a "view-only" trick?

This is genuine AES-256 PDF encryption using QPDF, the same open-source engine trusted by enterprise document tools. The file is cryptographically locked — it cannot be opened in any PDF reader without the correct password.

Does my file ever leave my computer?

No. The entire encryption process runs inside your browser using WebAssembly. VaultPDF never sees, stores, or transmits your document.

What happens if I forget the password?

There is no recovery. Because encryption is real, VaultPDF has no way to unlock the file for you — store your password somewhere safe.

What's the difference between the two passwords?

The password to open the PDF is required by anyone viewing the file. The owner password only controls permissions (printing, copying, editing) and is optional — most people only need the first one.
